If you have private insurance, it’s expected that you use it first to help cover the cost of your child’s formula, supplements, or special diet.
You can:

- Call their customer service line.
- Ask your pharmacist for help navigating coverage options.
Government Benefit Programs
There are several provincial and federal benefit programs that offer financial support for families of children with disabilities. Each program has its own eligibility criteria, so it’s important to review them carefully.

Short-Term Formula Assistance
Some formula companies offer coupons or a temporary supply (e.g., one case) for families transitioning from hospital to home or waiting for benefit approval. These are often called compassion programs.
Some charitable organizations may also provide accept applications to temporarily provide formula.

For Alberta families whose child has a disability:
- Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)
Eligible families have access to a wide range of services and supports. - Child Disability Benefit
If your child is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you may also be eligible for the Child Disability Benefit. The child disability benefit is a tax-free monthly payment made to families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions. - Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
The disability tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. - Registered Disabilities Savings Plan
RDSP is a non-tax deductible benefit that will help you to save money for your child’s future health needs.
