Private Insurance

If you have private insurance coverage, it is expected that you will attempt to use your private insurance to cover the cost of your child’s formula, supplements or special diet. You may be able to find the information you need on the company’s website, or call them directly. Your pharmacist may also be able to assist you with navigating your private insurance coverage.


Government Benefit Programs

There are numerous provincial and federal benefit programs that provide financial support for families of children with disabilities. Please review them all as each government benefit program has specific eligibility criteria. Other ways to save

  • Patient Assistance Programs
    Some companies that make formula offer free or low cost products to individuals who are unable to pay. These programs are sometimes called charitable drug programs, medication assistance programs, or compassion programs. Contact the company directly to find out if they offer this service. Your doctor or pharmacist may also know more.

For Alberta families whose child has a disability:

  • Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)
    Eligible families have access to a wide range of services and supports.
     
  • Child Disability Benefit
    If your child is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you may also be eligible for the Child Disability Benefit. The child disability benefit is a tax-free monthly payment made to families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions.
     
  • Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
    The disability tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay.
