Formulas for oral and tube feeding are prescribed by a health care provider, such as a Registered Dietitian or Pediatrician, to support your child’s age-appropriate growth and development.
The duration your child will need formula depends on their individual nutritional needs. Any changes to the type or amount of formula should be made by your health care provider.
While your child is using formula, regular follow-up is essential to monitor their health and ensure the best outcomes. Please work with your health care provider to determine how often these visits should occur.
Formula Coverage
Formula can be expensive, depending on your child’s nutrition needs and your family’s income. If you need help covering the cost, speak with a Social Worker or Registered Dietitian in your program area.
In Alberta, several government-funded programs may help with formula costs. Each program has specific eligibility criteria. A Social Worker can guide you through the application process. If you have private insurance, you are expected to use it first before applying for government support.

Order Formula
Your child’s monthly formula amount is determined by a Registered Dietitian based on their nutritional needs. Formulas may be ordered through the Pediatric Home Nutrition Support Program or directly from your local pharmacy.
If using the Pediatric Home Nutrition Support Program, a shared payment model applies:
- AHS may help coordinate the monthly supply
- Families may be responsible for part or all the cost, depending on their benefit coverage.
